• A radiant cooling system is an installation of embedded tubes or surface mounted panels that are designed to absorb and remove energy from a space.  A radiant cooling system uses the structure and surfaces of an area to transfer energy.

• In radiant heating systems, the energy radiates out from the heated surface towards the cooler area.  In radiant cooling systems, the cooled surface serves as a heat sink to absorb energy from the space.
• Most radiant cooling system designs fall within the following:
  • 12-14 Btu/h/sqft of Sensible Cooling
  • Up to 30 Btu/h/sqft of Solar Absorption
  • 66 °F minimum floor surface temperature
  • 76 °F to 78 °F room set point temperature
  • 55 °F to 58 °F supply fluid temperature

Radiant Cooling - Efficiencies

• Water has ~3,500 times the energy transport capacity of air
• With radiant systems, the ventilation function is separate
  • The volume of air moved and the component size can  be up to 5 times less
  • Duct sizes are smaller and fan horsepower may          be significantly reduced

Radiant Cooling System Economics

• LBNL modeled building in 9 cities comparing radiant with ventilation and other forced air VAV systems and found that radiant cooling, on average, saved 30% overall energy for cooling and 27% on demand
• The up front cost of a hydronic radiant cooling system is comparable to a VAV system
